Why PURELEI Became Germany's Default Waterproof Brand

Writing a fair review of a competitor is uncomfortable. It is also the only kind of review worth reading.

PURELEI is the brand most people in Germany think of first when they hear "waterproof jewellery," and that position was earned rather than bought. Founded in 2016 and based in Mannheim, it built its identity around Hawaiian-inspired design while almost everyone else in affordable jewellery sold the same interchangeable chains. Plumeria motifs, wave shapes, a warm island palette: a coherent visual language, and coherence is rarer than it sounds.

We make waterproof jewellery too, so read this with that in mind. What follows is not a takedown, because a takedown would be dishonest. PURELEI does several things genuinely well. What we can add is the part most review sites skip: what the material spec says, what it leaves unsaid, and which brands solve the problems PURELEI does not set out to solve.

The three things PURELEI gets right

Design identity. You can recognise a PURELEI piece across a room. Very few brands in this price bracket can say that, because most affordable jewellery is designed from the same trend boards.

Price. The range sits roughly between €12.90 and €47.90. A first purchase can cost less than lunch and the most expensive piece still lands under fifty euros — which matters more for a gift or a starter stack than any technical argument.

The guarantee. Since late 2024, PURELEI has offered a five-year guarantee. This is the most important item on the list and it deserves credit: a brand willing to stand behind a plated finish for five years is shifting real risk away from the customer, and very few in this segment do it.

What "Ion Plating" Actually Means

PURELEI describes its finish as stainless steel with Ionenplattierung — ion plating — in 14K or 18K gold tone. The term gets misread in both directions, so let us be precise.

Ion plating is a legitimate, high-quality process: a form of Physical Vapour Deposition, where the coating is vaporised in a vacuum chamber and bonded to the steel at an atomic level rather than deposited from a chemical bath. It is meaningfully more durable than traditional electroplating, and when a brand says IP it is describing a subset of PVD, not something inferior. The number nobody publishes

With any vapour-deposited finish, durability comes down to two variables: process quality and the thickness of the coating, measured in microns. A 0.3-micron IP finish and a 2-micron IP finish are both accurately called "ion plated." They will not behave the same after eighteen months on a wrist.

PURELEI does not publish a micron figure. Nor, to be fair, do most brands in this segment, including several alternatives further down this page — it is an industry habit rather than a PURELEI failing. But it is the most useful number a buyer could have. The five-year guarantee is arguably the answer: instead of publishing the number, PURELEI underwrites the outcome.

Worth noting too: "14K" or "18K" on a plated piece describes the colour of the gold tone, not the amount of gold in the item — true of PURELEI, of us, and of every plated brand on this page.

What 5,450 Reviews Add Up To

At the time of writing, PURELEI holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.4 out of 5 from roughly 5,450 reviews. That is a strong score on a large sample, and sample size is what makes a score meaningful: a 4.9 from 60 reviews tells you almost nothing, a 4.4 from thousands tells you a great deal.

It is worth being clear about what 4.4 means in practice: the substantial majority of buyers are happy. It does not mean nobody has a problem, because no brand at any price achieves that. Reading the negative end of a large review pool tells you where a brand's failure modes sit, not that it is bad.

The two recurring themes

In PURELEI's case, the critical minority clusters around two issues worth knowing before you buy: some reviewers report the plating coming away on heavily worn pieces, and others report set stones falling out.

Both are ordinary failure modes for plated fashion jewellery, and they link back to the thickness question above: when a finish wears through early, thickness is usually the reason, and when stones drop it is generally setting tension rather than materials. Neither is unique to PURELEI, and neither appears in anything close to a majority of reviews.

The five-year guarantee changes the calculus. If a finish fails inside five years, that is the brand's problem rather than yours. Weigh the guarantee alongside the negative reviews — and check whether it applied at the date of purchase, since it came in at the end of 2024.

One practical note: scores from different platforms are not interchangeable. Trustpilot, Trusted Shops and on-site widgets all collect and moderate differently, so compare like with like, and look at review volume before you look at the number.

Engraved versus script: what actually differs

An engraved piece keeps its own silhouette. A disc stays a disc; a bar stays a bar. The name sits on the surface in a small font, reads close up and disappears at conversational distance. Understated by design.

A script name necklace has no host shape. The name is cut out as the pendant itself, in a joined-up handwritten line, and it reads across a room. It is the format most people picture when they say "name necklace."

So few waterproof brands offer it for manufacturing reasons, not taste. Cutting fine script from 316L steel is harder than engraving a disc, and the thin strokes joining letters must survive daily wear. Most brands solve that with softer metals — brass, or plated silver — which takes the piece out of the waterproof category. None of these five is a straight replacement for PURELEI, because each solves a slightly different problem. Work out which problem is yours, then pick accordingly.

Trustpilot sits around 4.0 across roughly 2,980 reviews. Personalisation is not the focus.

3. ICRUSH — for the closest material match

Based in Cologne and trading since 2013, ICRUSH uses stainless steel with a PVD finish — the closest technical twin to what we make, and a close match to PURELEI's materials. If you compare on construction rather than styling, it belongs on your shortlist. Trustpilot sits around 4.0, alongside a Trusted Shops profile with more than 10,000 reviews.

4. Paul Valentine — for a broader range across price tiers

Also from Mannheim, founded in 2015, Paul Valentine runs a wider catalogue than the others here, including watches. Its jewellery is primarily plated brass, with two further lines in 925 sterling silver and 14k gold. That range is the appeal. The trade-off is that plated brass behaves differently to plated steel around water and sweat, so read the material description on each product rather than assuming it holds across the range. Trustpilot sits at about 3.9 across roughly 18,800 reviews.

5. Elli and Kuzzoi — for real 925 sterling silver

If you would rather own a precious metal than a coating, Elli and its menswear counterpart Kuzzoi work in 925 sterling silver — a genuinely different proposition. Sterling is solid metal throughout, so there is no finish to wear off. In exchange it tarnishes and needs periodic polishing, and gold-toned sterling pieces are themselves plated, which brings the wear question back. Choose sterling for material substance, plated steel to stop thinking about it.

How to Pick Without Guessing

Six brands is enough to cause paralysis. Narrow it with one question: what is the piece for?

Three questions that beat any review score

What is underneath the gold? 316L stainless steel is the strongest answer in this price range: corrosion resistant, very low nickel release, stable in water. Brass suits occasional wear better than daily water contact.

Who carries the risk if the colour goes? Almost nobody publishes coating thickness, so the honest proxy is the guarantee. PURELEI's five years is a strong answer here.

Does it come in the format I actually want? This is the question people skip, and the one that causes returns. A well-made engraved bar is not a script name necklace.

Where We Are Not the Right Answer

A comparison written by one of the competitors is only worth reading if it says where the writer loses. So, plainly:

We are a plated brand. 18k gold PVD over 316L stainless steel means a gold-coloured coating on a steel core — not solid gold, not sterling silver. If you want a precious metal, buy one: Elli or Kuzzoi in sterling, or a fine jeweller for solid gold.

We do not publish a micron figure either. It would be hypocritical to raise PURELEI's missing number and quietly skip our own. We use PVD over 316L and call our pieces waterproof; we are not going to invent a thickness spec to win an argument.
